Barrel, Cabin or Dome: Choosing an Outdoor Sauna

Outdoor saunas come in three broad shapes, and the difference between them is not really aesthetic — it is volume, heat-up time and what your yard can take.

Barrel

The curved form means less air volume than a square room of the same footprint, so it heats faster and costs less to run. The shape also sheds rain and snow without a separate roof structure. Typical capacity is two to four people on facing benches.

Best for: the common case — a backyard, two to four users, the lowest running cost per session.

Watch for: the curved walls mean less usable headroom at the edges, and the benches are fixed in ways a square room's are not.

Square cabin

More air to heat, so longer warm-up and higher running cost — but you get full headroom throughout, flexible bench layouts, and a building that reads as architecture rather than an object. Our custom square sauna room is made to order, so dimensions and bench configuration are specified to the room rather than chosen from a shelf.

Best for: larger groups, taller users, anyone who wants a specific interior layout.

Watch for: needs a properly prepared level base, and the heater has to be sized to the larger volume.

Panoramic and dome

A curved glass front turns the session into a view. Our panoramic round sauna is the statement version of this; the one-person dome is the opposite end — a single-occupant cabin that fits indoors and heats quickly because there is so little air in it.

Best for: a view worth looking at, or a very small space.

Watch for: glass costs heat. Panoramic rooms generally need more heater for the same volume.

What decides it in practice

  • How many people, honestly. Most home saunas are used by one or two. Buying for the dinner party you host twice a year means paying to heat empty air 363 days.
  • Electrical supply. Sauna stoves above about 4.5kW are typically hardwired 220V circuits. That is an electrician, and it should be priced in before you choose a size.
  • The base. All of these need a level, load-bearing pad — gravel, pavers or concrete. This is the step people forget.
  • Delivery access. These arrive by freight, at the curb. Getting a crated sauna from the street to the back garden is your problem to plan.

Sizing the stove

Heater output is matched to room volume, not floor area. See our separate guide on sizing a sauna heater in kW, or start from the Succebuy electric stove range, which spans 3kW to 9kW.
